Threads, the social network spun off from Meta’s Instagram, celebrated its first anniversary on July 5, 2024, having grown to 175 million monthly active users. This milestone was proudly announced by Mark Zuckerberg on Threads.
Rapid Growth and Steady Progress of Threads
When Threads launched on July 5, 2023, it experienced a meteoric rise, amassing 100 million users within just five days. Although the initial growth surge has tapered, the platform has continued to attract users steadily. By February, Threads reported 130 million users, which increased to 150 million by April. The latest figures show that Threads now boasts 175 million monthly active users.
Anniversary Celebrations
To commemorate its first anniversary and the 175 million user milestone, the Threads team introduced new custom icons for the mobile app. Users can choose from five new icons, available alongside the default one. These icons can be found in the Your Profile tab under the birthday cake icon. It’s important to note that these custom icons are available for a limited time, so users should select their preferred icon by July 12.
Integration with Meta’s Ecosystem
Threads is intricately linked with Meta’s broader ecosystem. As of June 25, users in over 100 countries can share their posts to the larger fediverse, enhancing the platform’s connectivity.
Content Trends on Threads
According to Instagram, 63% of all posts on Threads are text-only. However, a significant portion of posts—1 in 4—includes at least one photo. Additionally, voice notes are gaining popularity, especially among younger users. A recent Instagram survey of 2,000 users, ranging from Gen Z to Boomers, revealed these and other interesting trends about content preferences on Threads.
Threads’ first year has been marked by impressive growth and integration within Meta’s social media ecosystem, and it continues to evolve as a vibrant platform for diverse content.
