Well, well – what do we have here? A mysterious new Google device going by the codename “Tokay” was just spotted in a Geekbench 5 listing touting an unreleased Tensor G4 chipset. Could this be our first sneak peek at silicon destined for 2024’s Pixel 9 series?

The benchmark charts 8GB of RAM and Android 14 software, so likely a flagship phone. More interestingly, the processor configuration shows 8 total cores – 4 high-efficiency cores at 1.95GHz, 4 mid-cores at 2.6GHz, and 1 peak performance core hitting 3.1GHz speeds. The graphics seem powered by a Mali G715 GPU.

Now for some cold water – the actual benchmark scores posted aren’t terribly impressive by 2024 standards. In both single and multi-core tests, this Tensor G4 sample gets smoked by existing Android flagships running the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2.

Of course, take all this with a huge grain of salt for now. The “Tokay” codename doesn’t match up with leaked Pixel 9 and 9 Pro monikers either. Could just be a generalized test device at this stage.

But our first hints at the G4 regardless! With Google’s growing chip ambitions, I hope more optimization happens before the Pixel 9 debuts later this year. Low benchmark numbers aren’t everything, but with intensifying competition, Google needs every performance advantage it can marshal.

What do you all make of this leak? I’m eager to see Tensor G4 in an actual retail Pixel down the road. But hopefully with some extra power punch before then!
