Spotify recently implemented a price increase in the US, raising the cost of individual plans from $10.99 to $11.99. Dual Plans increased to $16.99 ($2 increase), and family plans now cost $19.99 ($3 increase). The streaming giant justified this hike by adding audiobook support to the platform, offering premium users 15 hours of audiobook listening per month.
Spotify New “Basic” Plan
Recognizing that not all users are interested in audiobooks, Spotify is launching a new “Basic” plan in the US. This plan provides unlimited access to music and podcasts without ads for $10.99 a month, essentially reverting to the old Premium plan under a new name.
User Experience
This move has raised concerns, as Spotify automatically switched everyone to the more expensive plan, requiring manual intervention to revert to the Basic plan. Many users may not make this switch for various reasons.
Upcoming Features
Additionally, Spotify is expected to launch a more expensive plan soon, introducing lossless Hi-Fi streaming. This new plan, anticipated to cost around $5 more on average, aims to compete with services like Apple Music, which already offers its full catalog in lossless quality without extra charges.
