Samsung Joins Princeton’s 6G Research Initiative as Founding Member

As a leader in mobile connectivity, Samsung is already looking ahead to the next generation of wireless networks – 6G. This week, Samsung Research America announced it has partnered with Princeton University’s NextG Initiative as a founding member.

Collaborating on the Next Wireless Evolution

The goal of the NextG Corporate Affiliates program is to drive 6G innovation by converting academic research into commercial products. Princeton is assembling a coalition across academia, industry, and policymakers to shape 6G in a collaborative manner.

Dean Andrea Goldsmith explains:

“Our NextG program aims to foster those deep collaborations around wireless technology, as well as policy, that are required to drive meaningful innovation and global leadership in an era of rapid change.”

Key 6G Focus Areas

The research initiative is currently exploring developments in areas like:

  • Cloud/edge networks
  • Intelligent sensing
  • Network resilience

Samsung has been prepping for 6G since 2019 when it established an Advanced Communications Research Center. With 6G not expected to reach mass adoption until 2028 maximum by 2030, these early R&D efforts are crucial.

By pairing Princeton’s academic expertise with the resources of industry partners like Samsung, the hope is to rapidly convert research into market-ready 6G products.
