This strategic alliance marks the convergence of Reliance and Disney’s streaming and media assets, culminating in the creation of an $8.5 billion entertainment giant within the populous nation of India.
Under the terms of the agreement, Reliance pledges a substantial investment of $1.4 billion (INR 11,500 crore) to bolster the growth trajectory of the newly established joint venture. In return, Disney gains access to coveted Indian cricket rights, a strategic move that aligns with the US company’s longstanding interest in the region’s lucrative sports market.
The combined entity will boast an extensive portfolio comprising 120 TV channels and two prominent streaming platforms. Moreover, it secures exclusive television and streaming rights for cricket tournaments, a pivotal element considering the sport’s immense popularity across India.
Analysts anticipate that the amalgamated venture will emerge as a dominant force in India’s sports media landscape, granting Reliance significant leverage in negotiating advertising agreements. Spearheading this transformative initiative is Nita Ambani, the esteemed wife of Reliance’s chairman, Mukesh Ambani, Asia’s wealthiest individual. Accompanying her in a leadership capacity is Uday Shankar, former Chairman of Walt Disney India, appointed as the vice chair.
