While specific terms remain confidential, the deal opens the door for Vivo to make amends via catch-up royalty payments to Nokia for past sales. With lawsuits withdrawn, nothing now stands in the way of Vivo returning to European markets after it was banned from selling phones there amidst the legal wrangling.

For Nokia, it represents the sixth major smartphone licensing deal secured in just over a year. Nokia’s licensing president Jenni Lukander says it provides long-sought-after stability in that business “for years to come.”

Both sides sounded ready to move forward positively. Vivo highlighted the importance of mutual respect for each other’s innovations and IP. Nokia in turn emphasized that collaboration fosters better conditions industry-wide.

So after years of lingering court battles, Nokia and Vivo finally struck a mutually agreeable middle ground. With the global patent peace pipe passed, each can refocus energies on customers and innovation rather than courtroom drama. And the mobile industry stands to benefit from two key players working more harmoniously.
