The rumor mill is churning again with possible design changes for the upcoming iPhone 16’s rear camera system. The latest whispers suggest Apple may shift the base iPhone 16 back to a vertical camera bump like the iPhone X from 2020 rather than the diagonal array of the iPhone 15.

Renders from leakers MajinBuOfficial and Apple Hub show a slim pill-shaped housing with two cameras vertically aligned and the LED flash off to the side. The iPhone 16 Pro would keep the same triple camera layout as the 15 Pro in these leaks.

Apparently, the reason for moving the standard iPhone 16 to a vertical camera system is to enable the recording of spatial video, a feature currently only on the Pro models. Spatial video utilizes wide and ultra-wide cameras to capture 3D footage viewable with a headset like Apple’s Vision Pro.

Other iPhone 16 specs per the rumor mill: same 60Hz display as the 15, A18 chip, 8GB RAM, Wi-Fi 6E, and the return of the physical Action Button rather than going capacitive.

Now it is a bit odd to see design elements still fluctuating this late in the development cycle. But the leaks could also be outdated prototypes from months back. Still, notable Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo had previously predicted a similar vertical camera design.

In any case, we likely won’t know the final iPhone 16 design until Apple’s expected September event. Along with the camera changes, rumor has it the Pro models will get larger overall and sport a wild looking tetra camera. Buckle up for more iPhone 16 gossip as the launch approaches! Let me know what changes you hope the new models bring.
