Well, well, look what we have here! Apple’s been quiet on its plans around generative AI models. But they just pushed out an early beta tool called MGIE that gives a taste of what they’re cooking up.
MGIE stands for “multimodal large language models-guided image editing.” A real mouthful, I know. It’s available on GitHub now with some instructions if you wanna tinker around. The idea is you can feed it text prompts to edit images in different ways.

Now this is just an initial research tool – not meant for primetime integration into iPhones or Macs yet. But some of the editing capabilities look pretty sweet! We’re talking about things like increasing image brightness/contrast, changing white balance, cropping, and resizing.
Check this out – you can input freeform prompts like “make this pizza healthier” and MGIE will add veggie toppings automatically! Wild right? It also attempts to modify hair, eyes, clothes, remove objects, and more based on text cues.
Still rough around the edges and nowhere near the polished end-product stage. But I take this release as a strong signal that Apple has much bigger ambitions in the AI generative space. If I had to guess, I’d expect capabilities similar to MGIE to trickle into Apple Photos, Camera, and other apps over the next few years.
For now, enthusiasts can grab this first version from GitHub and start experimenting. But even in its early form, these AI editing tricks get the imagination going, don’t they? Apple’s not one to be left out of the next big wave in tech – that’s for sure!
