Apple is set to bring major improvements to its smartphone operating system with the release of iOS 18. This update will usher in a new era of AI features, enable RCS (Rich Communication Services), and introduce other communication enhancements such as text effects and emoji reactions. Additionally, it will include a password manager and improved customization options. The good news is that all iPhones currently running iOS 17 will be eligible for the iOS 18 update.
This means that models as old as the iPhone XR, XS, and XS Max from 2018 will continue to be supported. The original iPhone SE, discontinued with iOS 16, is an exception, but the second-generation (2020) and third-generation (2022) SE models will still receive the update.
Here’s a list of all iPhones eligible for iOS 18:
- iPhone 15, 15 Plus, 15 Pro, 15 Pro Max
- iPhone 14, 14 Plus, 14 Pro, 14 Pro Max
- iPhone 13, 13 mini, 13 Pro, 13 Pro Max
- iPhone 12, 12 mini, 12 Pro, 12 Pro Max
- iPhone 11, 11 Pro, 11 Pro Max
- iPhone XS, XS Max, XR
- iPhone SE (2020, 2022)
However, only the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max will receive the new “Apple Intelligence” features, which will remain in beta even after the full launch of iOS 18. This means that the iPhone 15 and 15 Plus, as well as all older models, will miss out on these AI enhancements. The limitation is due to the hardware requirements, as the AI features are powered by the A17 Pro chipset found exclusively in the iPhone 15 Pro models.
The A17 Pro’s Neural Engine can deliver up to 35 TOPS (trillion operations per second), while the A16 Bionic offers only 17 TOPS, less than half the computational power. Some AI tasks will be managed by Apple’s Private Cloud Compute, but others will need to be handled on the device itself, necessitating the advanced capabilities of the A17 Pro.
Stay tuned as we bring you more updates and insights on iOS 18 and its features. With these advancements, Apple continues to push the boundaries of what its devices can do, especially with the integration of AI.
