Market research firm Counterpoint has released its tally of the top 10 best-selling smartphones globally in 2023, with Apple once again claiming an impressive 7 out of 10 spots. Unlike 2022’s unordered list, this year saw iPhone models occupying each of the top 7 positions sequentially.
Despite launching back in September 2022, the iPhone 14 emerged as 2023’s most popular device overall with around 3.9% share of total global smartphone shipments. Per Counterpoint, the US and China together accounted for nearly 50% of iPhone 14 sales. The 14 Pro Max and 14 Pro took second and third place, followed by the previous-generation iPhone 13 in fourth.
Rounding out Apple’s strong showing, the latest iPhone 15 Pro Max ranked fifth thanks to leading Q4 2023 sales. The iPhone 15 Pro and regular iPhone 15 took sixth and seventh place respectively. Samsung managed to grab the final three spots with its affordable Galaxy A14 5G, A04e, and A14 4G models.

Looking ahead to 2024, Counterpoint expects more manufacturer diversity among next year’s top sellers, predicting at least one Chinese OEM will break Apple/Samsung’s stranglehold on the top 10. The firm also anticipates more 5G-only devices will reach best-seller status as the next-generation network continues going mainstream.
For now, Apple retains an iron grip on the top smartphones by volume, filling 70% of Counterpoint’s 2023 list with seven iPhone options spanning various price tiers.
