The European Union’s newly implemented Digital Markets Act (DMA) is proving to be a game-changer for Apple, forcing the tech giant to open up its ecosystem and provide users with greater flexibility and choice. In a surprising move, Apple has announced plans to make it easier for users to switch from an iPhone to an Android device, as well as allowing the uninstallation of the Safari browser.
Seamless Migration to Android
In a bid to comply with the DMA, Apple is working on a “user-friendly” way for users to transfer their data from an iPhone to a “non-Apple phone” by fall 2025. This move signifies a significant departure from Apple’s traditionally closed ecosystem, allowing users to seamlessly transition to competing platforms without losing their valuable data.
Browser Freedom and Customization
But that’s not all. Apple has also revealed plans to enable the transfer of data between different browsers on the same iOS device, a feature expected to arrive between late 2024 and early 2025. Additionally, by March 2025, users in the European Union will have the ability to change their default navigation app, further enhancing user choice and customization options.
Uninstalling Safari: A Bold Move
In a bold move, Apple will also allow users to fully uninstall the Safari browser if they prefer using an alternative option. This feature is set to become available by the end of 2023, granting users the freedom to remove pre-installed apps they may not need or want.
The EU Catalyst
It’s important to note that these changes are likely to be initially limited to the European Union, as they are a direct response to Apple’s compliance with the DMA. Previous DMA-mandated features, such as third-party app stores and alternative payment systems, have been restricted to the EU region, with limitations on their availability outside the bloc.

While Apple’s embrace of openness and user choice may be driven by regulatory compliance, it nonetheless represents a significant shift in the company’s approach. As the tech landscape continues to evolve, Apple’s willingness to adapt and meet the demands of users and regulatory bodies could pave the way for a more open and competitive ecosystem, benefiting consumers worldwide.
